Some GenX statistics 

  • A quarter of GenXers don’t have a retirement account, according to a 2023 report from the National Institute of Retirement Security. The majority of the 64 million born between 1965 and 1980 expect to postpone their retirement. 
  • They carry the most in average credit card debt and they had the highest average student loan balance.  
  • Two-thirds are living paycheck to paycheck. 
  • More than 7 in 10 Americans between the ages of 35 and 60 are caregivers for both their children and their parents.

A Repair Café 

The Athens-Clarke County Recycling Division partners with community organizations to put on Repair Cafes every fourth Sunday of the month at the Solid Waste Dept at 725 Hancock Industrial Way. Attendees can bring their broken items and experts are there to help them repair it. The next Repair Café is April 26, 2-5 p.m.  

Fun to Do 

33rd Annual Tour of Gardens 

The 2026 Athens Tour of Gardens, sponsored by The Piedmont Gardeners, will feature four multi-acre private gardens with meandering walking trails, fanciful art, and a wide variety of flowers, shrubs and trees positioned to delight the eye and gladden the heart of every nature lover. The tour will be held on Saturday, April 18, from 10 am to 4 pm, rain or shine. For ticket information, go to piedmontgardeners.org. 

Party on! 

The all-classes high school reunion (1968 to 1975) will gather once again on June 6, at 1055 Barber St., for their sixth annual get-together. Randy Jackson, one of the organizers, expects several hundred people who graduated from Clarke Central, Cedar Shoals, and the local private schools during that era, to show up and enjoy catching up, dinner and dancing to the Dirk Howell Band. Last year was “epic” and this year will be “epicer,” he says. For ticket information, email randyjackson7983@gmail.com.  

Pétanque Tournament

Classic City Pétanque will host the fourth annual Federation of Pétanque USA Southeast Region Mixed Triples tournament the weekend of May 2 – 3 at Lay Park, 297 Hoyt St. In all, 24 teams (72 players) will complete for medals and cash prizes. Several visiting players include national champions and international competitors. Spectators are welcome to bring chairs and enjoy this French game of strategy. UGA Theatre closes the season

“Sense and Sensibility,” a modern adaptation of the Jane Austen novel, will be held in the Fine Arts Theatre, April 10-12, and April 15 – 19. Described as “fast-moving and irreverent,” the play is by Kate Hamill, one of the most widely produced playwrights in the U.S. She’s known for transforming beloved novels into bold, theatrical experiences.
